    QShould I notify the Appraisal District if I move?
    AYes, If you move and your mailing information changes, you should notify the District in writing. Be sure to include you new mailing information so you will get your appraisal notices and tax bills at the correct location.

    QI turned 65, do I have to do anything to get my additional exemption?
    ACongratulations, you will recieve an additional exemption on your Texas homestead. The District tries to get all the over 65 exemption information and automatically apply them. But, just to be sure, give yourself a birthday present and let us know.

    QIs there a 100% Veteran exemption for residential homesteads?
    AYes. You should call the office and get the staff to assist you in the application process. 361-729-9733

    QI live in Colorado for six months of the year, do I qualify for the homestead?
    AMaybe, you must have your primary residence in Texas to qualify. Owing a vacation home does not preclude you from having a homestead exemption in Texas, however, it must be your primary residence.

    QDo I have to file a Business Personal Property Rendition every year?
    AYes, you must file a rendition every year. However, the new form has a box that may be checked if your business property has not changed over the course of the year. Just sign the form and return it to the District. Check our links section for the rendition form.

    QI closed my business. Do I need to tell the Appraisal District?
    AYes. You need to tell the District in writing if you closed your business. If you are planning to have a Going out of Business sale, you must report the information to the District. There is a form for that process and we will issue it to you. We will be happy to assist you with the processs.

    QI closed my business in December. Do I have to pay taxes for the next year?
    ANo. You only have to pay taxes for the year you were in business and owned on January 1st.

    QI opened my business in April and closed it in March the following year. Do I have to pay personal property tax for that?
    AYes. If you owned the business and were in operation on January 1st you are responsible for your rendition and the associated property taxes.

    QI sold my house. Do I have to tell the District.
    AIt is a good idea to tell the District, even though we get the information from the County Clerk's office it is prudent to do so.

    QMy spouse died. Do I have to change the information on my deed?
    AThis situation requires the advice of an attorney. Please call your attorney, they will guide you through the process.

    QI just bought a house here. Do I need to do anything?
    AYes. You should carefully check the information on your deed. The mailing information that will apply to your account will be on the deed. If you do not want your mailings from the District and the Tax office to go to the address on the deed, you need to let the Appraisal District know.

    QI bought 6.2 acres. The District only shows that I bought 5.8 acres. Whats wrong?
    AYou need to carefully check the information on your deed. If the District has made an error that is easily corrected. Just bring it to our attention. If the deed indicated that you bought 5.8 acres you may need to check with the title company for clarification.The Appraisal District is an office of record, we simply record the information that we receive. It is always best to have legal assistance with closings. It is always a good idea to provide the District with a survey if possible.

    QMy dad left me 15 acres in his will. The District does not show I own the property.
    AFile the will or legal papers with the County Clerks office, when the District recieves the information the property will be transferred. The District does not transfer ownership by newspaper notifications or death certificates. The District is not the official recording agency.

    QThe District has the acreage listed on my account wrong. What do I do?
    AFirst refer to your deed. It has the information about the actual transfer of the property. The District may or may not have it wrong. If it is wrong, provide the District with a copy of the deed and we will be happy to correct it. Be sure to go to the County Clerks Office and make sure they have the correct information also. It is always a good idea to provide the District with a survey if possible.
